I said so because Sri Bhagavan's old classmate Vilacheri Ranga Iyer and one other at least, who could be trusted to know about it, had assured me that, from what Sri Bhagavan had told them of this incident, they were convinced that it was only Sri Bhagavan who had worked the miracle. When I made the above remark in the Hall to those near me in Sri Bhagavan's presence and hearing, He did not deny my assumption.Sri Bhagavan related to me once the following incident that happened when He was living on the Hill : "A bullock cartman was engaged one night by a lady, new to this town to take her to some street. The cartman purposely took her to some out-of-way place near the Hill and was about to attack her for her jewels or molest her. Then, two constables appeared on the scene and threatened the cartman and escorted the lady to her proper destination. The lady noted the numbers of the constables and made enquiries afterwards about them and it was ascertained that no human police constable had ever done such a service on that night ! "
All knowledge is meant only to lead the person to the realisation of the Self. The scriptures or religions are well-known to be for that purpose. What do they all mean? Leave alone what they say of the past or of the future; for it is only speculative. But the present existence is within the experience of all. Realise the pure Being. There is an end to all discourses and disputes.
Distracted as we are by various thoughts, if we would continuously contemplate the Self, which is Itself God, this single thought would in due course replace all distraction and would itself ultimately vanish; the pure Consciousness that alone finally remains is God. A visitor asked: Sri Bhagavan said last night that God is guiding us. Then why should we make an effort to do anything?M.: Who asks you to do so? If there was that faith in the guidance of God this question would not have arisen.D.: The fact is that God guides us. Then what is the use of these instructions to people?
M.: They are for those who seek instructions. If you are firm in your belief in the guidance of God, stick to it, and do not concern yourself with what happens around you. Furthermore, there may be happiness or misery. Be equally indifferent to both and abide in the faith of God. That will be so only when one’s faith is strong that God looks after all of us.
Again today a visitor put questions : "I do not understand how to make the enquiry, " Who Am I ? "Sri Bhagavan : Find out whence the "I" arises. Self-Enquiry does not mean argument or reasoning such as goes on when you say, 'I am not this body, I am not the senses,' etc.; all that may also help, but it is not the enquiry. Watch and find out where in the body the "I" arises and fix your mind on that.
D.: Will 'Gayatri Mantra' help ?
Sri Bhagavan : What is 'Gayatri Mantra' ? It really means : "Let me concentrate on That which illumines all." Dhyana really means only concentrating or fixing the mind on the object of dhyana. But, meditation is our real nature. If we give up other thoughts, what remains is "I" and its nature is dhyana or meditation or Jnana, whichever we choose to call it. What is at one time the means, later becomes the end ; unless meditation or dhyana were the nature of the SELF, it could not take you to the SELF. If the means were not of the nature of the goal, it could not bring you to the goal.
